A bowl of rice a day keeps the pounds away

According to a study by Japanese researcher professor Tomoko Imai of Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts in Kyoto, upping one’s rice intake may be effective in weight reduction.

Imai highlighted a trend that is apparent among multiple Asian countries including Japan, saying that there does not appear to be an obesity epidemic thus far and this might be related to their diets which make rice a staple.

This hypothesis clashes with reports emerging in the West stating that low carb diets– which limit the intake of rice– are necessary for weight loss. However, rice’s direct effect on weight gain has not yet been established.

The research team calculated that the slightest increase in rice consumption by around 50g each day per person, could impact the worldwide prevalence of obesity, decreasing it by 1 percent.

Imai suggests that the fiber and nutrition content found in rice can give the feeling of fullness for a longer period of time and can prevent overeating.

Although more research has yet to be conducted, this development could prove to be a breakthrough in finding safe alternatives to leading a healthier life.
